FireEye and their Red Team tools

The cybersecurity giant, FireEye, was recently hit with a cyber attack in which there was unauthorized access to their suite of tools used to evaluate the security posture of enterprise systems. In other words, this highly sophisticated threat actor took tools from this company who could then use them maliciously. Luckly, FireEye has released two blog posts with more information and a GitHub repository for detection countermeasures. This was certainly an expensive incident for them though, as well as embarrassing, time consuming, and stressful.

The New Cyber Threat that is TrickBoot

As much as we hate to be the bearers of bad news, we need to warn you about the new cyber threat that is TrickBoot. (The amount of cybersecurity threats has only gotten more plentiful this year. What is TrickBoot?

TrickBoot is the latest instrument in the TrickBot malware repertoire and potentially one of the most dangerous as it capable of discovering vulnerabilities in firmware and enabling attackers to then read, write or even erase the firmware on the device. Typically, when a device is infected with malware, one of the safest methods you can use to remove it is by wiping the device and then restoring the important data from a backup. However with this method, the firmware of the device is unaffected. If malware is hiding well enough, then wiping the device means the malware is not removed.
